RE-CAP OF BEST BUY CHICAGO CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

Team Dennis

May 24-26, 2013

What a weekend we had at the Best Buy Chicago Classic Tournament. WGGBA opened up pool play with two lopsided wins hitting 99 points and 89 points against their opponents.  Team Dennis ended up being the number one seed heading into bracket play.

They started bracket play with an impressive win over a team from Illinois.  The final four-game was against a solid team from Illinois that was beating teams by 20 points a game.  But not WGGBA! Team Dennis beat them by 11 points.

Now on to the finals against the Predators from Illinois, the team that beat our other WGGBA 10th grade team earlier in the day.  It was an instant classic.  The game went to FOUR overtimes and we ended up losing by 2 points.  In two of the overtimes, we had the ball last and couldn’t finish.  One overtime, we were up 3 points, and they hit a deep three by a nonshooter, deep in the corner, to send it to another overtime.

The last overtime, the official called a foul with 2 seconds left that was a jump ball, so Team Dennis ended up losing by 2 points.  After the team got over "how in the world" they lost that game, they finally realized that we still came in second place at a tournament in Chicago.  What an accomplishment for Team Dennis.

Team Austin

Team Austin's two pool games were warm-up games for them. They blew out both teams, and in one of the games, they set a WGGBA record by scoring 107 points. They were on fire from everywhere. They were the number 1 seed and ended up playing the Predators. What a game it was, but the Predators pulled it out at the end. Team Austin was very disappointed and is looking to bounce back at AAU Nationals in Virginia.
